10:00AM - Wednesday
This session will be “Tales from the Fix-It garage, and weird things you can find when working on MG’s (and other cars)”.
Some will be show and tell, some will just be photos, because the physical evidence has gone or too large to transport ( like the whole car!, I’ve got a couple of those) or just tell if that’s all I have. Plus of course a question and answer session for attendees to lob curve balls at me.
Steve is a retired Engineer who has worked all over the world in various engineering roles for large corporations. He has a Bachelor of science degree in Engineering from the University of Durham in the United Kingdom and is a Member of the UK’s Institution of Mechanical Engineers. This background helps understand the technical theories and logic behind the practical experiences you get when ones hands get dirty.
Coming from the other side of the pond he is used to working on British cars, amongst others, and has been doing so for 55 years. He has been the Technical Coordinator of the Chicagoland MG Club for the last 11 years and a member of the club for 17 years. He gets to see an average of about 40 cars a year, as well as offering advice on numerous others. Most of these are MGs, but Triumphs, Minis, Austin Healey’s and Morgans are also included. There has even been the odd Sunbeam Alpine, Nash Metropolitan and Morris Minor that have crept into the garage. Occasionally he even gets to work on one of his own cars!
9:30-10:30 & 11:00-12:00 Tuesday -and-
9:30-10:30 & 11:00-12:00 Wednesday
This session is an introduction on SU “H” series carburetors. It is intended to explain the basics of carbureted systems as well as give first-hand experience on tearing down, inspecting and reassembling these carburetors. We will also discuss the tooling required to modify these units to perform at optimal performance. By the end of this session, you will have a fundamental understanding of the initial setup, tuning and proper rebuilding procedures.
Mark Huff, is the director of the Classic Car Division at Motor Works in DeKalb, Illinois. Motor Works opened in 1984, and he has been with them for over 20 years.
He could say his training started at seven years old, with tractors on the family farm and my Great Grandma’s original 1951 Ford Deluxe. Motor Works has always had a passion for classics, however due to space constraints, they were limited to one bay and lift to work on these cars. Four years ago, an opportunity came up to purchase an adjoining building and shift their classic car restoration efforts into high gear. Today, he gets to work his dream job, with 7300 square feet dedicated to restoring, maintaining, and modifying these classics. This includes a whole room for engine, transmission and carburetor
rebuilding. This space houses the precision tools and the wide variety of parts that allows him to ensure that every project that crosses his bench leaves better than it left the factory. During his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family and working on his own project cars.
His fleet includes a V8 swapped 2002 Ford Ranger, and a 1966 Mustang. While working on countless MGs and Triumphs daily, he hadn’t owned my own piece of British car history, until his most recent find, a 1972 MG MGB GT. He stays current and continues to seek out learning opportunities. He was recognized as the 2012 Chicagoland NAPA / ASE Technician of the Year and kept up my accreditations as an ASE Master Certified Technician. Alongside his formal training, he has received an invaluable amount of knowledge under the mentorship of the original owner of Motor Works. He is passionate about sharing his knowledge with future generations of automotive enthusiasts, which has resulted in a close working relationship with the Chicagoland MG Chapter. He loves the opportunity to discuss and explore the possibilities these vehicles have and tackling any challenges that come up along the way.
3:00 - 4:00 Tuesday
Mr. MG, John Twist, will present a very informative discussion on Speed Tuning for your MG.
This will be a lively discussion. How to extract more horsepower from your MG engine? Many secrets will be revealed!
John's presentations are always well attended as he does deep dives into the subject with humor and extensive question and answer sessions.
9:30 - 2:00 Wednesday
In the hotel car park, John will hold his very informative "Rolling Tech Session" working on participants cars and discussing problems and solutions.
If your MG is not quite running as it should, add your car to the queue on Wednesday and John will spend some time diagnosing what he believes is the problem and make the necessary corrections as he can.
